As I was driving to my cousin’s baby luau this afternoon, I was listening to ESPN Radio as I often do.
Legendary Washington Redskins cornerback Darrell Green was giving his NFL Hall of Fame induction speech. He had a number of former friends, family, coaches and players to thank, and he briefly talked about his path from junior high through the NFL.
But it was the last thing he said that struck me, and I’ve been thinking about it all day.
Green’s very last statement — as he stood upon the pinnacle stage that ALL football players aspire for — was this:
“At the risk of sounding self-righteous, I belong here.
I belong here because I know what to do with this. With God’s fame… with God’s visibility… with God’s success.”
This was anything but a self-righteous statement.
To me, it was a courageous acceptance of his calling, as a man in a position of power and influence, to proclaim the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
It was as if he was saying God, you’re the reason I’m standing here and I’m going to make you proud. I fully accept this position, and I’m going to use the gifts you’ve blessed me with to bless your kingdom many times over.
Here’s the question you need to ask yourself right now:
Do I belong here?
For any position of power or influence you have in your life right now - with your friends, at work, in your church, in the marketplace - did God pick the right person for the job?
Think about that.
Do you belong there? Or are you falling short of His expectations when he put you in that position?
I want to wake up every day knowing that I belong exactly where I’m at and with the wisdom to know what to do with it.
With great power certainly comes great responsibility. Each of us need to boldly accept that responsibility every day.
